We joined members of the Royal Thai Navy Border Security Unit from the First Naval area command on Friday as they intercepted Vietnamese fishing vessels which had entered Thai waters illegally. We looked on from a helicopter as the interception took place. The heavily armed officers were prepared for all eventualities but a search of each vessel uncovered nothing untoward. The Thai authorities often encounter foreign vessels which fish illegally in Thai Waters and on this occasion a total of 12 boats were seized and 108 Vietnamese Fishermen were detained and were found to possess no passports. A de-brief at Command Headquarters after the operation praised those involved and it was confirmed that a major offensive against illegal fishing by foreign vessels in the Gulf of Thailand is now underway.
