Fire at Foam Factory - Pattaya People

The Nongkham Police received notice of a fire at the SPI Group factory in Sriracha. 5 fire engines were called to extinguish the dangerous blaze. At the scene there were 2 companies in 10 buildings owned by Koreans. The fire started in the 5th building and then jumped to the 4th and 3rd buildings. The fire fighters tried to stop the flames, but because the interiors of the buildings were full of foam granules, an excellent fuel for fires, this caused great difficulty to the firemen. Finally after one and a half hours,  the fires were quenched.  The inferno totally destroyed the 5th and 4th buildings and slightly damaged the 3rd building. The investigation revealed that while the workers were pouring foam granules into the molding oven, a spark of fire flew out of the oven and ignited the foam granules, starting the blaze immediately. At this point the employees hurried out the building and called the authorities.

8 HORSESHOES TAVERN - Pattaya People

It is from Russia with love this occasion as we ventured out to Thappraya Road to visit the first class 8 Horseshoes Tavern.   This celebrated Russian restaurant has been in operation since 2005 and is a well established favourite with Russian folk.  The reason is the outstanding Russian cuisine served here, all courtesy of restaurateurs, Sergei and Mikhail.  Not only specialty Russian food but also a good array of Uzbek and Thai dishes as well!   A well known Russian saying is “the trouble with eating Russian food is that 5 or 6 days lager you are hungry again.”  Well, that is certainly true at 8 Horseshoes Tavern, the portions are enormous, and fortunately the prices are not!   Starters range from 90 baht for a range of homemade pickled items such as Cucumbers, Cabbage, Tomatoes and Mushrooms.  One can have a platter of each including Pickled Eggplant for 180 baht.  There is also a very fine tasting Salmon Tartar served with Hash Browns and Sour Cream at 220 baht.  Other specialties to try are Beef Tongue with Horseradish Dip (150 baht) and Herring platter or Salted Salmon at 200 baht. All worth a try!  Salads are a must here especially the Russian Farrago Salad made with Beetroot and Pickles (150 baht) and the Stolichny Salad, the classic Russian Salad mix of julienne cuts of Vegetables with Potato Salad and Beef (160 baht).  Not to forget before going to the main course the wonderful offerings of freshly made Soups – especially Borsch Moskovsky (170 baht) and Solyanka Soup (190 baht), a thick hearty soup with an assortment of meat, sausage, ham and olives.   Another popular favourite style of cooking with Russians is the BBQ offerings, such as Shasklyks from 210 baht for Chicken to 300 for Salmon.  There is also Beef Lulya Kebab at 210 baht.  On to the main courses!  First off there are house specialty dishes that have to be pre-ordered such as a whole Special Baked Duck stuffed with Apples and Prunes at 900 baht, Leg of Lamb at 1,800 baht or a large Pastry Pie stuffed with Meat, Cabbage, Mushrooms or Apples at 900 baht.  One can order straight away the Meat Horseshoe (360 baht) with Duck, Chicken and Pork and the delicious Crab and Prawns boiled with Dill at 450 baht.  So to the other main offerings, such as Pelmeni (200 baht), Russian style Ravioli with ground Beef, Golubtsy (220 baht), Cabbage Rolls stuffed with Meat, Rice, Onion and Spices. Other classic dishes include Beef Stroganoff (220 baht), Chicken Kiev (260 baht) and Vareniki Potato Dumplings (160 baht).  If you are really hungry go for half a Chicken (240 baht) or a fine Beefsteak with Tomatoes and Cheese at 280 baht.  Uzbek dishes include Lagman (200 baht), a traditional soup with a riot of colours and textures with Beef, Vegetables and homemade Pasta. There is the national Uzbek dish of Lamb Pilav (250 baht) with Rice, Lamb and Spices. Plus Manty, which is oriental style steamed large Ravioli stuffed with Minced Beef (200 baht), and Kazan Kebab (260 baht) made with tender chunks of Lamb stewed with Potatoes.  Classic Thai dishes are available such as Tom Yam Kung (150 baht), Fried Prawns (200 baht) and Thai style Clams at 220 baht.  So to the tasting!   To start off we had the assortment of great tasting Pickles, especially good were the Mushroom and Tomato offerings.  This was followed by a flavorsome Holodets (160 baht), homemade Beef Jelly with Horseradish Dip and first class Herring platter (200 baht) and equally delicious homemade Salted Salmon (200 baht).  Then 3 styles of Soups arrived, beautiful Moscow style Borsch (170 baht), a hearty Pea Soup (160 baht) and the thick rustic Solyanka (190 baht) a yummy broth filled with Meat and Sausage.  The homemade Pelmeni dumplings are perfect especially with the Sour Cream.  Equally so were the Meat Cutlets (220 baht) with ground Beef, and the Beefsteak was first class made from good quality meat.  We had to try a house BBQ specialty Salmon Shashlyk (300 baht) and the Uzbek Manty dish, (200 baht) once cut into the aroma hits you as you dig into the tantalizing textures within the dumplings!   Worth a try!

Wine is good here at 100 baht a glass, but of course it wouldn’t be a Russian restaurant if it didn’t have their national drink – Vodka!  Here there is a vast range to discover, including the house specialty homemade Khrenovuha Vodka laced with Honey and Horseradish (110 baht) – wow!  By tradition (and who can say no) a glass of this Russian Nectar is thrown back with virtually every mouthful of this delicious cuisine here at the 8 Horseshoes Tavern. Located before intersection with Pratamnak Road on top of Thappraya Road on right side going towards Jomtien! Worth a visit! Nostrovia!

Resolution of Squabble at Bali Hai Pier - Pattaya People

Last Saturday, on Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya municipal officers drove a vehicle backwards and hit the motorcycle of a local fellow. The local and the officials ended up in a dispute, which then devolved into an outright fist fight.  And in these days of instant news, someone shot a video clip of the donnybrook, and posted it on the internet; the video has now been seen and commented on by many viewers.

On Tuesday, Deputy Mayor Ronnakit Agasing stated that this issue has been successfully resolved.  Both parties work at the same place, and they know each other very well, and they see each other every day, but sometimes these associates are ill-tempered, and wind up arguing.  The man who started the slug-fest (Cherd-sit Boon-kliang), the person who tried to stop the quarrel (Nat-ta-pong- Poot-su-wan, and the victim (Tha-nong-sak Pi-sit) were all invited to explain what happened. The victim said that he earns his living by summoning customers to board a boat, and the officers were on the job as usual, but on at that day the officers happened to drive their vehicle backwards and hit his motorcycle. He then asked them why they did not apologize, but the officer replied “So what, who you are, do you know what problems I have right now?” Apparently the officer was in a bad mood. Then the fight began, with the officer landing the first blow. The victim further stated that he knows the officer, because they see each other every day at Bali Hai Pier. He allowed that sometimes they were both in a ragged state of mind, which can lead to such encounters. However, he insisted that he was no longer angry, and did not wish to press charges against the officer.

The Mayor had appointed a committee to investigate this matter, and determine the facts. The Deputy Mayor concluded that even if the victim did not press charges, the officer must be punished according to regulations, because he is a city official and was in uniform. The officer was already warned during the preliminary investigation.

Ladyboy Pickpocket Apprehended - Pattaya People

Early on Wednesday morning, the Pattaya Police were notified of a pick pocketing incident on Beach Road, opposite the Police Station on Soi 9. The officers rushed to the location, where they found the victim Mr. Heinrich Renner, aged 45, a German citizen. Heinrich told the Police that as he was walking along the beach, he was approached by a ladyboy who was sitting by the beach. The ladyboy proffered his sexual services, and during that encounter, the ladyboy grabbed the money in Heinrich’s pocket and ran off. The offender, K. Pai-sit Thong-suk, aged 20, was taken to Police station where the ladyboy confessed to Police that he saw that the foreigner looked rather drunk, and wanted to offer him a tune-up, but once the victim realized that he was not a real woman and tried to walk away, he decided to grab what he could. Nightlife Reviews: Hooked...

Roxy is a south Walking Street GoGo next to Insomnia disco.

Roxy isn't particularly nice inside and overall the girls are average, perhaps just slightly below average.

But the prices are fine for Walking Street and I was quoted 700 baht for a bar fine early in the night. The girls didn't seem to have crazy prices either; one quoted 1,000 ST after some finessing. They seemed to be very interactive this time around, but it could be an aberration because the crowd was abnormally young and the girls seemed genuinely excited.

There are two lovely deaf girls there if you're into that; perhaps the best two looking girls there. The lineup has more tattoos than I'm used to seeing for whatever reason which is worth mentioning since some guys like that sort of thing and others don't.

The atmosphere was good and I had fun. I know the management doesn't exactly crack the whips there so the girls seem free to dance or talk to guys as they please; this style appeals to a certain type of clientele.

Thailand News: Knocking Nok...

The Thai government plans to ask Youtube to remove a video clip joking about the sex industry in Thailand.

The clip is a parody of a commercial for the Rosetta Stone foreign language learning programme. The spoof was produced by popular American late-night television show Saturday Night Live .

In the video, foreigners are interested in learning the Thai language so they know how to say things like, How much? , Is that for the whole night? or How can I take off your clothes? in Thai.

Culture Minister Sonthaya Khunploem said that the Culture Watch Centre is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an effort to have the video removed from Youtube.

The government will also claim to the United States embassy that the commercial spoof is tarnishing Thailand's image and will ask the embassy to explain the situation to the producer of Saturday Night Live, Sonthaya said.

Rather ironically the Thai culture minister is the brother of the Mayor of Pattaya which is very much the capital of the tourist sector of the sex industry. Perhaps the minister should consider that his actions are contributing to an image of hypocrisy and internet censorship.

One Thai commenter kindly translated the culture ministers diplomacy speak:

Even though it might be true, the producers should not offend Thailand this way.

Update: Censored?

5th February 2013.  See article from nationmultimedia.com

YouTube has removed the Rosetta Stone Thai spoof video clip produced by US late-night TV show's Saturday Night Live that portrays Thailand in a negative light, mocking the country as a destination for sex tourists. Well at least according to Apinand Poshaya-nond, deputy permanent secretary for culture, who 'confirmed' the removal yesterday.

Apinand said yesterday that the ministry would explain the situation later to the producer of Saturday Night Live .

Meanwhile you can watch the 'offending' video on...you've guessed it... YouTube !

Comment: What a proper minister of fun would have said

6th February 2013.  See article from notthenation.com

This video is neither accurate nor humorous, and relies on outdated stereotypes to make fun of our nation and culture, said Thailand's minister of fun: The truth is that Thai prostitutes and those who provide sex services are fluent in English.

The minister blasted the video's ignorant suggestion that foreign tourists who wished to experience the unique pleasures of Thailand's extensive commercial sex services needed to undergo expensive and difficult language training.

Our sex tourism industry is one of the world leaders in the field, and we have serviced millions of satisfied customers -- male and female -- for decades. English, Chinese, German, Japanese, Russian, French, and Arabic-speaking sex tourists from around the world know that you don't need to speak a word of Thai to enjoy sex in Thailand. We are proud of this and will fight to maintain our image.

Thailand News: Going it Alone...

Residents in 27 at-risk communities in Bangkok have been warned to brace for floods this weekend as heavy rains are expected from tomorrow (Friday) until Monday. All the flood-prone communities, home to around 1,200 families, are located along the Chao Phraya River in areas that have no embankment.

However, having an embankment is not always a guarantee against flooding. Such is the case in Sukhothai, which has seen water from the Yom River seeping in even though the level is not overflowing the embankment.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reckoned that relevant authorities would have to shift their focus on provinces downstream from Sukhothai.

We are now assessing the situation and trying to prepare solutions for all possible scenarios, she said. When asked whether her government would be able to control the flooding, Yingluck said, I can only say that we are doing our best .

In a separate interview, Komsan Maleesee, deputy dean of the Faculty of Engineering at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, said the government should not just say that the problem was beyond control.

Attempted Burglary During Countdown - Pattaya People

On Tuesday, the Sriracha Police Deputy Superintendent Pol. Lt. Col. Pisit Poonsab were summoned by a neighbor of a house in the area that had just been broken into by a man, aged around 25. The burglar was still inside the house going through the belongings of the owner of the house, who had taken his family abroad for a New Year holiday, leaving his dog to guard the house.

When the police arrived at the house, the burglar jumped of the window and ran inside a bushy area behind the house, then fled the scene, indicating that the burglar was a local and knew the area very well.

The police found a steel bar used to break open the window, a black backpack and a pair of flip-flops belonging to the suspect in the house. The neighbor stated that the dog was barking like there was an intruder, and therefore, the police were called, as this fellow inside the house was certainly not a family member.

Progress in Mystery Shooting - Pattaya People

On Wednesday afternoon, the Pattaya Police Investigating Inspector Pol. Lt. Col. Songkram Pahn-iam and a team of police examined the apartment of the new Pattaya Police Superintendent, Pol. Col. Suwan Chiao-na-win-ta-wat, which is located in the Pattaya Policemen’s Flat behind the Pattaya Police Station, on Soi 9 of Pattaya Beach Road. The apartment had been shot at the back balcony, during the Countdown on Monday, December 31st, 2012. A glass window and a shelf were shattered, but no other injuries were reported.

The police found a 12 gauge shotgun shell on the ground, and witnesses stated that a man, wearing clothes like a policeman but appearing to be very drunk, was walking around the flat before the countdown. When the fireworks started, he fired 1 missile at the back balcony of the Police Superintendent, then fled the scene right before the fireworks finished.

The police now have enough information to track down the shooter, who is thought to be a police officer at the Pattaya Police Station. Legal proceedings will be taken against the gunman, as Pol. Col Suwan expects that he is one of the officers who lost a lot of illegal paybacks due to his new anti-corruption and bribery policies. The new Superintendent is insisting on transparency in all police activities, and receiving bribes from shady businesses will no longer be tolerated.

On December 26th 2 female Russian tourists were robbed and raped. The suspects robbed the victims in Soi Pratamnak 2, and took them to Chark-nok Reservoir in Huay Yai where they raped them. These thugs have been on the loose ever since.

On Tuesday morning, the Nongprue Police, led by Superintendent Pol. Col. Somneuk Jangaid, in companied by the Deputy Commissioner of Royal Thai Police Bureau Region 2 Pol. Maj. Gen. Sanchai Chai-ya-am-porn and Police Commander of Chonburi Pol. Maj. Gen. Katcha Tartsart searched a house on Soi Mab-yai-lia 33, of a suspect called Mr. Wichain Jaija, aged 30-35. The 2 victims went to the house and positively identified the blue Toyota Mighty X pickup as the vehicle used to abduct them.

The police requested the owner of this pickup, the ex-wife of Wichain, to go for an interrogation at Nongprue’s Police Station along with the other 2 male suspects.

On the same day, Wichian was arrested and detained. The officers had determined that Wichain and his partner in crime had raped and robbed the 2 female victims while a male teenager watched the road. Further interrogations will be done to nail Wichain, which will certainly involve the 2 victims ID’ing the suspect as the next step towards his prosecution.

Rubbish Issue on Lan Island - Pattaya People

At the Pattaya Mayor’s Performance Press Conference, on Saturday afternoon at Pattaya City Hall, a team of Spokespersons, led by Miss Yuwatida Jeerapat announced the results of the Mayor and City managers performance this year. Many questions were posed regarding various unresolved issues, as well as future projects of Pattaya City Hall. The answers were given by the spokespersons team.

One of the serious issues brought up was the massive amounts of rubbish on Lan Island, and what solutions are being sought for this problem. Miss Yuwatida explained that the number of tourists on Lan Island has been increasing rapidly and so the amount of rubbish there has increased commensurately.  The transport of the rubbish to the main land for processing has not been sufficient, however, Pattaya City Hall has proposed a budget for Rubbish Storage. This will enable Lan Island residents to separate the rubbish for recycling and energy generation. City Hall also plans to increase the transportation of the refuse off the island, to reduce the amount of rubbish.
