Banglamung Police Road Check after Spate of Bike Thefts in Area - Pattaya People

Banglamung police set up one of their regular road checkpoints on Monday afternoon at the Railway crossing road to Soi Khao Noi.  The aim, as always, is to monitor traffic and suppress violations such as motorcyclists not wearing safety helmets or not carrying any ID.  Since there has been a recent high spate of motorcycle theft in the area, ownership documents were demanded to be seen.   Many stopped could not provide such evidence, so were either fined or in suspicious cases the bikes were impounded and riders taken back to the police station for further questioning. Of course, the other aim of this operation is to help crackdown on criminal activities, especially those involved in drug trafficking and drug addicts.

As the event falls on a very busy Saturday, hopefully people will take to bicycles and the streets of Pattaya will look like Amsterdam or Beijing where bicycles are one of the official modes of travel.

Jesters Care for Kids Annual Fair a Great Success - Pattaya People

This last Sunday one of Pattaya’s most popular and oldest charity events took place.  Time certainly flies by as this is the 15th occasion that the Jesters Care for Kids annual fair took place, again at its regular venue, the Diana Garden Resort in North Pattaya.  The stage was set for a fantastic day of fun and games in the resort grounds. The place was filled with stalls, entertainment stages, public facilities, and loads of rides and games, plus a climbing mountain and horse rides, all set up for an incredible family day out, all in aid of charity.  This September, the weather was kinder than the same time last year, when sadly the event was a washout with a tremendous downpour of torrential rain.  To add to the great atmosphere, Jesters had the cooperation of Pattaya City Hall, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Regents International School and all media groups, including Pattaya People Media Group.   All funds raised will go to helping underprivileged children and other local community services, such as the maintenance of rural schools with clean drinking water, toilets, canteens and other essential projects. Other needy organizations helped were Father Ray Foundation, the Baan Jing Jai, and Pattaya Orphanage.  Guests were entertained with singers, dancers and bands made up from local schools, including Regents and the Garden International School in Rayong. The day was a great success, and it is not over yet!  There will be a gala dinner planned for Saturday, 22nd September at the Amari Orchid Pattaya Resort on North Pattaya Beach Road where all the items from sponsors, such as famous stars of the big screen and TV will be auctioned plus surprise guests will attend to raise more money for the Jesters Care for Kids Charity.

We joined members of the Royal Thai Navy Border Security Unit from the First Naval area command on Friday as they intercepted Vietnamese fishing vessels which had entered Thai waters illegally. We looked on from a helicopter as the interception took place. The heavily armed officers were prepared for all eventualities but a search of each vessel uncovered nothing untoward. The Thai authorities often encounter foreign vessels which fish illegally in Thai Waters and on this occasion a total of 12 boats were seized and 108 Vietnamese Fishermen were detained and were found to possess no passports. A de-brief at Command Headquarters after the operation praised those involved and it was confirmed that a major offensive against illegal fishing by foreign vessels in the Gulf of Thailand is now underway.

Thailand News: Rain...Floods...Rain...Floods...

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has announced it is to hike park entrance fees from October 1 at 29 national parks countrywide.

TTR Weekly reported that fees for Thais to visit most parks will rise from B40 to B100 for Thais.

For foreigners, the rise for most will be from B200 to B500, others will rise from B400 to B500.

TTR Weekly quoted the managing director of Nutty Adventures and Ayutthaya Boat and Travel, Nithi Subhongsang, as saying that the announcement had come as a shock and would have a horrible impact on inbound tour operators because contracted prices are signed for the entire year and the ones for next year are effective until October 2013.

The parks department claims the top national parks are suffering from too many tourists and the new fees will be a deterrent to help fight deterioration of a sensitive environment. Also, the department says, it will use the additional revenue to improve facilities to better serve tourists .

Park fees were last raised five years ago, also at short notice, causing a storm among mass operators.

Bogus Lottery Sheets in Pattaya - Pattaya People

On Saturday night, Mr. Anugoon Gra-jaang-jaeng, aged 45, complained to the media about the Lottery Sheet for September 1st, 2012. He declared that something was not right about the lottery numbers on this sheet, and that the numbers shown on this issue were old numbers from previous lotteries.

At the first and middle of the month, the government reviews the Lottery numbers, and the Lottery Review Sheets called in Thai as “Riang-ber” are always sold all around the city, at almost every traffic light. The people who bet their money in the lottery always buy the lottery review sheets to see if their wishes are granted, but this September 1st Issue was confusing. Mr. Anugoon checked his 3 lottery tickets with this review sheet, and found that there were no winners for him, so he threw the 3 tickets away. However, his friend picked up the tickets, and checked the numbers online, and found that one of his tickets won 5th Place.

Investigating further, Mr. Anugoon brought up the review sheet of August 16th, 2012, and found that the 2nd Place and the 5th Place numbers were identical to the September 1st    lottery numbers.

Further investigations will continue to find the facts behind this incident. Mr. Anugoon believes that the printer of the review sheets should be responsible for the losses of the people who won the lottery, but missed their chance to collect their winnings, as they relied on the information from these bogus review sheets.

The poor fellow, name unknown, was working with his earphones on, connected to his cell phone’s radio.  As he was moving around the pole, people below noticed that he was backing into a dangerous spot on the platform, where the main transmitters are located.  They tried to warn him several times, but to no avail, so when he touched the transformers, there was a very loud explosion with a ball of fire and smoke behind it.  The worker fell from the pole to the ground, and was briefly knocked out.  After being taken to the hospital, the good news is that he will be fine, and perhaps be more careful.

Drunk Driving Smashes Six Motorcycles - Pattaya People

On Wednesday, the Pattaya Police Investigating Inspector Pol. Capt. Tidiwat Boon-on were called to investigate an accident on Pattaya’s Third Road, near Central Pattaya, in front of Porn’s Vietnam Food Restaurant. The police and Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team rushed to the scene, and a brand new white Chevrolet with red plates was found crashed on to the sidewalk, after smashing into a motorcycle and then six more bikes, all seen in ruins on the side of the road. The restaurant’s sign and a marble table were also destroyed.

Luckily, the owners of the 6 wrecked motorcycles were safe, as they were sitting outside eating when the Chevrolet careened over the sidewalk and onto their bikes.  However, the owner of a motorcycle that was wrecked and underneath the car, was a grilled pork ball vendor with a sidecar, and he had slipped into a coma after the accident.  Witnesses stated that the Chevrolet was charging along at extreme speed, as if the driver were very drunk. The driver crashed into the back of the pork ball vender, and dragged the vender and motorcycle underneath the car as the momentum of the sedan pushed the car onto the sidewalk.

There was no sign of the Chevrolet driver.  Witnesses also reported that a black Vigo pickup, which was following the Chevy, stopped and picked up the driver and fled the scene. The police network was alerted to search for the Vigo, but found no sign of the truck that evening.  Further investigations will be made a bit easy, as the police can start with the registration of the Chevrolet.

Adult News: Meter Maids...

New York's highest court is set to hear arguments on whether Nite Moves , a strip club in suburban Albany, deserves a state tax exemption similar to that for theater or ballet.

State tax officials say the club owes an 8% sales tax for admissions to the club and for so-called couch sales, where patrons pay for private lap dances, the Associated Press reports.

Nite Moves claims the dances are exempt under state tax law as live dramatic or musical arts performances, which applies to theater and ballet, the AP reports.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office argues in its briefs that some Nite Moves performers have no dance training and simple pick it up by watching. Such a dancer isn't engaged in a genuine choreographic dance performance when she removes her clothing, the brief says.

But Stephen Dick, the club's CFO, dismisses the notion that formal training should be any critera when its comes to entertainment.

Thailand News: Turning a Blind Eye to Local Produce...

Banned Thai political drama Shakespeare Must Die , directed by Ing K, will be among the films screening in the Asian Competition section of the 6th Cinema Digital Seoul Film Festival (CinDi).

The director said at the opening ceremony:

I thank CinDi for inviting my film even though they had to ship it under a secret name -- Teenage Love Story -- because the film is banned in Thailand, where people live in fear. I'm suing the government so I shouldn't even be here.

We are fighting because in Thailand, directors have less than human rights. But I promise Shakespeare Must Die is not boring. I made it like a Mexican soap opera and a Thai horror film. You can see it, even though Thai people can't see it.

Pansak Vinyarat, chairman of the Prime Minister's advisory board, will oversee the four newly-announced high-speed rail routes. The 400-billion-baht first phase is scheduled to be completed in 2018. Cost of the first phase is estimated at 400 billion baht. Trains will travel at speeds of up to 250 kilometers per hour.
The high-speed train system will run alongside existing lines for the Bangkok-Pattaya-Rayong  line from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport.
The Pattaya train line runs parallel to Sukhumvit Highway 3, about 200 meters east of the main thoroughfare. Nearby  train terminals for Pattaya  are already built on Siam Country Club Road in Central Pattaya and on Wat Yan Road in Na Jomtien. The entire route can be traveled in under an hour on the 220 kilometer Bangkok-Airport-Pattaya-Rayong route. Pattaya to the airport will take about 35 minutes and Pattaya-Bangkok will take 42 minutes.
The other three routes are Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima (256 kilometers in 1 hour, 35 minutes); Bangkok-Hua Hin (225 kilometers in 1 hour, 9 minutes); and Bangkok-Phitsanulok-Chiang Mai (745 kilometers in 3 hours, 44 minutes).
The high-speed train will reach other Asean member countries and southern China with both passenger and goods trains, expected to carry products such as light parts, high-tech parts, seafood, fresh-cut flowers, vegetables and fruits.
The government anticipates that goods shipment by rail will increase to 80% of the total domestic shipments in six years from only 2% now. This will reduce logistics costs by 35% or 400 billion baht a year on lower petrol consumption.
In the second stage of these projects, slated for completion by 2022, the high-speed lines will be extended to Bangkok-Nong Khai, and Bangkok-Hat Yai, covering all the major regions of Thailand.
Most importantly, the Bangkok-Nong Khai route to the Northeast is expected to link with high-speed trains from Laos and southern China. Construction of the China-Laos section of the high-speed line is expected to commence soon.
During the tenure of the previous Democrat government, China and Thailand reached a preliminary agreement to cooperate on the high-speed train project, as China aims to link its southern region with the mainland Asean countries.
The Asean Economic Community (AEC), which will become effective in 2015, is a key driver in the government's bid to revive the four high-speed train routes, as Thailand has the potential to be a hub in the mainland AEC for both cargo and tourist traffic.
These projects will also lead to a better link for Thailand’s Laem Chabang Port with Myanmar's proposed Dawei (Tavoy) deep-sea port and industrial estate 500 kilometers away near Kanchanaburi.
Besides China, India is also keen to connect with Asean countries via its border with Myanmar. The Indian government has offered a US$500 million credit line to Myanmar, of which $100 million is earmarked for construction of a trilateral highway linking India, Myanmar and Thailand.
The route will be 3,200 kilometers in total length, and development work includes improvement of existing roads in India and Myanmar, which will be linked with Thailand via the northern provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, as well as via a route for the planned Dawei port. This will complete the Asean east-west economic corridor running from India, Myanmar and Thailand to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
For the Asean north-south economic corridor, the route starts in southern China and connect through Myanmar, Laos and Thailand to Cambodia and Vietnam, and then all the way down to Malaysia and Singapore.By assigning Pansak to spearhead the THB 400-billion high-speed train schemes in Thailand, the government is playing a crucial role in pushing for fast-track
implementation of Asean connectivity schemes, which cover highways, railways and other modes of transportation. It is hoped that the transport infrastructure will eventually be designed to cover the entire 10-country regional grouping, which has a combined population of 600 million.
Besides Asean itself, the grouping has another six partner countries, namely China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, whose combined population accounts for half of the world's total.
