Commemorating King Taksin the Great Day - Pattaya People

Mayor Ittipol Khunplume and Management and staff at Pattaya City Hall gathered at the front of the building on the morning of 28th December to take part in a ceremony at the statue of King Taksin the Great.  The occasion was to commemorate the coronation on 28th December 1767 of King Taksin at the Wang Dern Palace in Thonburi, the new capital of Siam. King Taksin the Great is regarded as a national hero and is revered by Thai people for liberating Siam from Burmese occupation after the fall of the capital Ayutthaya in 1767.  He established Thonburi (opposite what is now Bangkok) as the new capital as Ayutthaya had been destroyed by the Burmese.  The king paid attention to politics, administration and the welfare of the country and promoted trade with foreign countries such as China, Britain and the Netherlands.  He had roads and canals built and promoted the arts, culture and education.
